PLANNING · UPDATED 22 OCTOBER 2026
A weekly social media plan for small businesses
A useful plan connects what you publish to what customers need to know. Start with three posts a week and a short review, then adjust to your capacity.
1. Pick one goal and one main platform
Choose a goal you can observe, such as enquiries for one service. Start where your existing customers already interact with you. Ask a few customers rather than assuming every business needs every platform.
2. Plan three jobs for your content
- Show: a product, finished result or demonstration.
- Explain: answer a question that slows down a booking or purchase.
- Invite: show the next step, with real availability and clear details.
Keep a note of questions from calls, messages and in-person conversations. These are useful starting points for next week’s posts.
3. Batch the work in one session
Try a 60-minute planning session: 10 minutes choosing questions, 25 minutes taking photos or clips, 20 minutes drafting captions, and 5 minutes checking links and details. This is a suggested starting budget; allow longer if you need editing or approvals.
Set aside a short period after publishing to answer genuine questions. Use a schedule you can sustain; seven ideas do not have to mean seven consecutive daily posts.

Friday

Track: Qualified enquiries and confirmed bookings
4. Choose times to test
Start with your own account insights if available. Otherwise choose two realistic time slots when your customers may be free, and test comparable posts over several weeks. There is no universal best posting time for every small business.
5. Keep a simple results log
For each post, record: date, topic, format, reach, profile or website visits where available, qualified enquiries and confirmed bookings. Add a note about seasonal factors or offers that may have affected the result.
After two weeks, look for repeated patterns. Keep useful topics, improve unclear calls to action and avoid comparing a one-off viral clip with an ordinary service post as if they were equivalent. Ask customers how they found you; attribution will still be imperfect.
